Biochar is a charcoal-like substance made from organic materials that's used in a variety of applications, including:

Soil amendment

Biochar can improve soil structure, water retention, and porosity. It can also help reduce acidity, regulate nitrogen leaching, and improve microbial properties.

Carbon sequestration

Biochar is a carbon sink that can help address climate change by storing carbon dioxide in the soil for many years.

Animal feed

Biochar can be used as a feed for livestock to improve yield and animal health.

Concrete additive

Biochar can be used as an additive in concrete.

Fuel slurry

Biochar can be mixed with liquid media to create a fuel slurry.

Water treatment

Biochar can be used in water treatment applications.

Land reclamation

Biochar can be used in land reclamation.

Nursery production

Biochar can be used in nursery production to reduce irrigation inputs.

Biochar is made by heating organic materials through pyrolysis, such as wood, shells, crop waste, or animal manure, in a contained system at temperatures over 1000°C. The result is a lightweight, black, and porous material that's rich in carbon.
